Set against the wilds of Northern California in 1871, Heathens & Thieves is a timeless western in the broadest sense. It follows the story of Saul, a Civil War veteran turned drifter whose loyalty is tested on all sides. His world is full of guns, horses, gold and dubious lawmen. But in the vein of Double Indemnity or The Postman Always Rings Twice, Heathens & Thieves is also a finely nuanced noir mystery. Kun Hua is the ravishing femme fatale, the frontier wife of a Chinese man trying to live the American dream. Even the dramatic fog-filled landscape imbues the story with a sense of intrigue, where alliances are broken and nothing is as it seems.

At its core, Heathens & Thieves is also a fresh, modern story. It treads the unfamiliar territory of the Western Chinese-American experience; it tackles timely issues of racism and disillusionment in a post-war era. It is at times violent and hard-hitting, pushing the envelope of political correctness. It is also breathtakingly beautiful, making full use of the vast California forests, mountains, and ranch lands that are rarely seen in traditional westerns. We want to push the genre; we want to make it something unforgettable.

So far, Heathen & Thieves has been a project blessed with passion and momentum. It began with three friends and colleagues determined to make an independent film and has evolved into its present state: a partially completed movie with forty percent already filmed and the remaining sixty percent slated to be filmed in October 2009. This project has gathered an amazing pool of talent, all dedicated to creating something truly exciting and beyond the generic studio experience.

Our project has already garnered an amazing amount of resources, from the expertise of professional crew members—who have exploded sets for Clint Eastwood, shot the wilds of Africa and South America for National Geographic and Discovery channels, garnered writing awards from the Academy of Motion Pictures, and much more—to locations including a 3,000-acre ranch in Northern California, stocked with horses.

We are all 100% committed to making this film to its greatest potential, the scope of which can only be aided by participation on your part. We hope that you recognize this film’s potential and join us in the adventure.
